Quick report on something that is regularly asked by customers, partners and Cisco field folks: is Solaris supported by Oracle when it runs on Cisco compute platforms?
The short answer is yes, but there is more to come on the topic.
You can get the proof from Oracle and Cisco, and I’ve posted a snippet at the end.
Why is this important? The powerful compute blades and the 10GbE converged networks that make up UCS are a cost-efficient way of running production workloads: if you want to run Oracle on Solaris then you will find that the numbers add up for running it on UCS.
Yes, there are times when some Oracle workloads will run best on an Oracle stack but you have to ask yourself: what proportion of my workloads need that mad professor custom-built stack, versus what proportion will benefit from a powerful, standardized stack that is between 30-50% cheaper?
That kind of money talks, so be a hero to your CFO: run Oracle on Solaris on Cisco.
