World Class IT

IT is often seen as a burden, as a cost centre, and not often as “core competency” if you are a bank, a hospital or a retail chain.

IT often deserves this negative image because it IS a burden on cost, it does NOT help the business as much as it could, and it is mystifying to those outside it, and often those on the inside. It has often been said that if IT was run like a business, it would have gone bankrupt many decades ago. It is also often said that IT is the last bastion of inefficiency, ineffectiveness, and poor governance. Why is this happening? But more importantly, what can be done about it?

It DOES NOT follow that if the answer was easy it would have been discovered before now: many “easy” things, things that seem obvious with hindsight, are not discovered until ideas and thoughts are shared and suddenly an answer becomes clear. Isaac Newton did not just make up the answers on his own: he “stood on the shoulders of giants”. Einstein’s “simple and easy” formula of E=mc² came from his insight into old problems through using thinking from a different angle. Einstein famously said that “One cannot solve problems with the same thinking that discovered them.” This also applies to IT.

Good2great is a movement of IT professionals who are using Einsteinian thinking to improve IT, by using a scientific, rational method for IT instead of gut-feel, hair-on-fire and hero-for-hire methods.
