Where are YOU on the GenAI Track Level?
Technology conferences have long used ‘track levels’ to help professionals navigate complex learning landscapes.
Generative AI follows on from virtualization and cloud and is poised to rapidly transform business and technology.
So, can a similar track level framework help organizations and individuals to map their AI journey and strategic potential?
Exploring the track levels from 100 to 400
When you attend a conference you are given a schedule in your hand, on a website, or in a mobile app. It’s overwhelming.
To make this easier, the organizers assign a “tech track level” to each session to help you work out where you fit the best:
- Level 100 – Beginner. Total n00b. Unaware it was a thing.
- Level 200 – Intermediate. More hands on, know it’s a thing, wanting to solve it.
- Level 300 – Advanced. In the business of solving it.
- Level 400 – Master Expert. In the business of teaching others to solve it.

We know what this is for the “legacy technologies” (I’m teasing!) like virtualization and cloud, but what about the new kid on the block, generative AI?
Adding GenAI to the tech track level taxonomy
Here’s a revised taxonomy with a new column for GenAI.
- RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): “Using external knowledge bases to improve AI response accuracy”
- SOTA (State-of-the-Art): “Most advanced and high-performing techniques in AI research”
Where do you think you land on this taxonomy today? Where do you want to be (and why?).
Coming soon from Viewyonder: GenAI Action Plan
Viewyonder’s GenAI Action Plan is a playbook designed specifically for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) seeking to systematically integrate generative AI.
The plan provides a structured approach to assessing current capabilities, identifying AI opportunities, and developing a tailored implementation roadmap.
It has been developed to understand present and future modes and achieving consensus in the team: not everyone likes or believes in GenAI, and some people are way ahead than everyone else.
Included in this AI Action Plan will be guidance for individuals and links to things they can do to “move up” the GenAI track levels.
