Why We Need a Simple Scoring System
Having worked with various maturity models since developing the VMware Operational Framework and CMMI in 2006, I’ve learned that while comprehensive frameworks have their place, what we need right now is something simpler. Something that helps everyone—from AI novices to confident users—gauge their readiness for the AI-enhanced workplace.
The Reality of AI’s Impact
Let’s be clear: AI will affect different jobs in different ways. It might be early days now, and there’s definitely hype, but don’t relax your guard:
- Manual Jobs: While the physical work might stay the same, how these jobs are managed and scheduled will transform
- Administrative Roles: Just as word processors changed typing pools, GenAI will reshape administrative work
- Mid-Level Positions: Roles combining domain expertise with technical skills will evolve significantly
- IT Professionals: Interestingly, even tech workers aren’t immune—the landscape is shifting for everyone
The GenAI Readiness Score
I propose a simple 25-point scoring system based on five key factors. Rate yourself 1-5 in each category:
- Domain Expertise Level
- How well do you know your field?
- How deep is your professional expertise?
- Economic Value
- How crucial is your role to your organization?
- What unique value do you bring?
- Technical Literacy
- How comfortable are you with technology?
- Can you use AI tools effectively?
- Learning Agility
- How quickly do you adapt to new tools?
- Are you enthusiastic about learning?
- Support Environment
- Do you have access to learning resources?
- Does your workplace encourage innovation?
Scoring Example
Let’s look at a real-world example:
A mid-level insurance IT professional
- Domain Expertise: 2/5 (Solid but not expert)
- Economic Value: 2/5 (Reliable contributor)
- Tech Skills: 2/5 (Basic programming and AI prompting)
- Learning Agility: 3/5 (Self-motivated learner)
- Support Environment: 4/5 (Good peer network and encouraging workplace)
Total Score: 13/25 = 52%
What Your Score Means
Is 52% good? What if your boss said “You need to be 70% to keep your job in 2025”? How do you change your score?
This score isn’t just a number—it’s a starting point for:
- Understanding your current position
- Identifying areas for growth
- Planning your professional development
- Setting realistic goals for skill enhancement
Next Steps
The true value of this scoring system lies not in the number itself, but in helping you:
- Assess where you stand today
- Envision where you need to be
- Create a roadmap for personal development
Remember: The goal isn’t to achieve a perfect score, but to identify your strengths and areas for growth in the evolving AI landscape.
Your Turn
What’s your GenAI score? More importantly, what’s your target score, and what steps will you take to get there?
